Friday 4-13 Music and Recap Video!

Photo

Hey guys,

Great job yesterday!  We're really making progress as we enter the 2nd half of the class.  It was fun working on grooves, maintaining stick technique and even some cool drum transferring

I can't emphasize enough how much straight up playing time will get you there technique-wise - a total of 45 minutes between classes will do wonders :)

I went ahead and recorded the piece since we ran out of time (we were just in the zone)

Cheers and enjoy your weekend!

Kevin

LMC TCD Class 2 Recap [Tuesday] SPRING 2012

Photo1

Hey class,

Great practice tonight!

The Blog!: Great resource: this email and future ones go up here. (http://theinfinitemusic.posterous.com)

You finished your first jam and the first parts of your own composition.  They say the first steps are the most important and I'm really proud of the kind of thinking I already see taking place!

VIDEO of Part A (1+2):   [SHEET MUSIC ATTACHED]

From the first class:
- Intro to stick twirling (harder than it looks, but just as awesome)
- Proper stick holding technique
- Quarter notes through 1/16th notes.
- Sticking - starting with our dominant hand, alternating.
- A take on Simon-Says, following me.

From today:
What: Warmup: Music game, 1st with just sounds, and 2nd with sentences about MIT. (we also started to repeat just one person's line, which required a bit of listening, and ended up feeling a bit sad in my opinion. stay cheery!)  The overall tribal feel was very cool though!
So what?: This was to teach independent playing, improvisation, and staying on beat.

What: Jamming - our 1st!  Splitting off in sections and concluding by following me.
So what?:
1) It's fun!  and 2) It begins what will end up as improvisational, a true drum circle jamming out together.  You will start to see the layers.  More to come.

What: Starting our own composition!
So what?:
This was really cool to watch.  I know we only got to 2 sections, but this will speed up, trust me.  In addition, I love that you guys are thinking expansively into different rhythms and strokes.  This will provide us a really broad canvas to work with.

The homework/homefun that we have until Thursday is as follows:
1) Practice the piece thus far a few times every day.

1b) Also, just practice playing to get those drumming chops up!

This should take about 10 minutes total.

2) Think about fun ideas for the next development in our piece.  I heard talk of multiple layer pieces and I'm really excited to see what we can do.  For inspiration, feel free to check out the last class' final performance:

NEXT CLASS DETAILS:
When: Next Tuesday @ 845pm *show up 15 early to learn awesome stuff! (music game, drum rolls...)
Bring: Sticks, headphones, brains!  We'll be doing some really cool development on our piece next time; please arrive early if you can, we've got a lot to cover.
And: Bring Pens!  And a notebook so you can start copying down the piece.  This is a really good exercise and will familiarize you with writing music as well as the piece itself.

Keep playing!  It's only the beginning!
